Welcome to St. Christopher's Church! Join us for worship on Sundays!!!!!
From the Rector's Desk
We know not the time nor the hour. Of course this sentence makes us think about that time when we will be called home to leave this earthly plane, but the sentence has another meaning for me. On Sunday mornings I sometimes swing by a Starbucks on my way into work, usually wearing my clergy collar. I see the same people, share some hellos and I am on my way. Last Sunday, a young woman who I see frequently but who hardly speaks beyond repeating my order and wishing me a happy day suddenly spoke diretly to me. “What is your sermon about today?”
For the first time I saw this serious faced woman, though still not smiling, look at me expectantly. There was something there, as her eyes appeared to widen in expectation. She was, as I realized later ready to receive “something,” and yet, I was hardly ready for this. Just as we know not the time and the hour of our death, we know not the time or hour when God will place in our path someone who needs something that we have.
She added: “I don’t go to church, I am too busy, but I like to hear about spiritual things and understand what others are experiencing.” By then I recalled the sermon I would give in just a little over one hour from then, and told her about the words from Jesus to “abide in me.”
She asked if that meant to “follow,” or “obey,” and she seemed generally surprised when I shared with her that it meant to “immerse” oneself in Christ and his way, just as He immerses himself in us (if you were in church Sunday you might recall this sermon). Our exchange ended as she handed me my “frappacino” but something else was shared in those moments. We connected in a spiritual way. She is searching, and at the same time, I am looking to be utilized by God…so in that moment we were both abiding in Christ together as we sought and served one another’s thirst for the spiritual.
We are called to continually share our faith, our journeys, and our stories. Not to tell people that we are better than they are (we are not), but to share what it is like, and what it is not like, when one is engaged with God. I pray this week you can take moments to quietly reflect on where God is in your life, your journey and your story and share that with someone. As you abide with Christ, know that you are enveloped by his love!
Your brother in Christ,
Father Peter+
